Neurocientista da Universiy College London (UCL) Ganha o Prêmio Nobel de Fisiologia ou Medicina
Ontem de manhã, dia 7 de outubro de 2014, eu recebi um email da Equipe de Relações com Ex-alunos da University College London – UCL, anunciando que o Professor John O’Keefe, professor e pesquisador dessa universidade, havia ganho o Prêmio Nobel de Fisiologia ou Medicina. Neste ano o prêmio Nobel de fisiologia e medicina contemplou os avanços nas pesquisas sobre o mapeamento interno do cérebro, sendo compartilhado entre John O’Keefe, 75 anos, um neurocientista da Universiy College London (UCL), e o casal de noruegueses constituído por May-Britt, afiliada ao Centro de Computação Neural, Trondheim, Noruega e Edward Moser, afiliado ao Instituto Kavli de Neurociências, Trondheim, Noruega. May-Britt e Edward Moser trabalharam com O’Keefe durante a década de 1990.
O professor O’Keefe descobriu o primeiro componente do sistema de navegação mental, trabalhando em ratos na década de setenta, quando conseguiu mostrar que certas células do hipocampo eram ativadas sempre que um rato se encontrava em determinado local. Ele as chamou de ‘células place ‘e mostrou que tais células place não apenas registravam o que os ratos viam mas também o que não viam, construindo diferentes mapas para diferentes ambientes.
Nascido nos Estados Unidos O’Keefe foi para a UCL na década de sessenta. Quando na década de setenta ele anunciou a sua descoberta das células place, especulando que elas precisavam de informações análogas à latitude e longitude a fim de poderem mapear espaços, alguns cientistas julgaram que se tratava de um possível artefato.
Em 2005 Moser e May-Britt descobriram na região do cérebro conhecida como córtex entorinal medial, um outro tipo de neurônio que tinha uma função parecida com a das células place, chamando-as de ‘células grid’. Essas células apresentam padrões hexagonais de atividade que se estendem sobre o espaço atravessado, de uma forma parecida como as linhas de latitude e longitude do globo. As células grid e as células place têm um papel importante na navegação. Consideradas as pontes que ligam o nível celular ao nível cognitivo, tais células possuem memória do passado e conseguem imaginar o futuro

UCL is delighted to report that Professor John O’Keefe, Director of the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre for Neural Circuits and Behavior at UCL, has been awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
The award is for the discovery of cells that constitute a positioning system in the brain – an ‘inner GPS’ – that enables us to orient ourselves. Professor O’Keefe won the award jointly with Professors May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, both of whom spent time in Professor O’Keefe’s laboratory as visiting postdoctoral fellows.
As inaugural Director of the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre for Neural Circuits and Behavior at UCL, Professor O’Keefe is responsible for leading a team of researchers at the cutting edge of understanding how brain circuits process information to create neural representations and guide behavior.
Professor O’Keefe, who won the award jointly with Professors May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, discovered the first component of this positioning system in 1971 when he found a type of nerve cell in the hippocampus that became activated whenever a rat was in one location in a room, with a different set of cells active when the rat was in a different area. He concluded that these ‘place cells’ formed a map of the room. In 2005, the Mosers identified a nerve cell that allows for precise positioning and pathfinding. The place cells and nerve cells discovered make it possible for the brain to determine position.
The Nobel Assembly said today: “The discoveries of John O’Keefe, May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser have solved a problem that has occupied philosophers and scientists for centuries – how does the brain create a map of the space surrounding us and how can we navigate our way through a complex environment? “The discovery of the brain’s positioning system represents a paradigm shift in our understanding of how ensembles of specialised cells work together to execute higher cognitive functions. It has opened new avenues for understanding other cognitive processes, such as memory, thinking and planning.”
Announcement of the award has been welcomed across UCL:
Professor Michael Arthur, UCL President & Provost, said: “John O’Keefe is one of UCL’s outstanding neuroscientists and I am delighted that his work on the very basic question of how the hippocampus in the brain stores spatial information and thus allows us to navigate our way through a complex world, has been recognised by the award of the Nobel Prize in Medicine. John continues his ground-breaking work as the first Director of the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour and I am delighted that this new institute at UCL will be guided and led by such a distinguished scientist.”
